Come rain or shine, 88-year-old Bermudian Johnny Barnes devotes six hours every day to an endearing traffic ritual that has made him one of the island’s most cherished citizens.

Chances are, you’ve never heard the name Willis Earl Beal. Understandable, given that this Chicago singer-songwiter, artist and writer has spent the past few years quietly, locally getting his name out there by passing out hand-drawn flyers, singing wherever and whenever he could. But all that need to self-promote has come to an end. As Urban Eyez put it, “The universe works in mysterious ways. Sometimes when you put yourself out into the world, nature has a way of figuring out the rest.” Indeed it does. This fellow with a colorful past finally got on the radar of folks like Davy Rothbart of Found Magazine (who put one of Beal’s flyers on the cover of Issue Seven, which also included Beal poetry, artwork & interview) and Leor Galil of the Chicago Reader. From there, Willis’ crazy-mad talent was picked up by blogs everywhere, like Okayplayer and It’s Nice That. Somewhere in all this, XL Recordings also took notice. Beal’s first album, Acousmatic Sorcery, will be released in March by XL Recordings via their new imprint, @Hot Charity. So if you didn’t know the name Willis Earl Beal, you do now. And will continue to hear it, I suspect, for a very long time to come. Video: Same Old Tears. Soundcloud: Evening’s Kiss.

I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.
Professor Stephen Hawking (born 8 January 1942)

“Why is it that sooner or later no matter what we talk about … we wind up talking about Addie Ross?”

For several days now i’ve been feeling somewhat unsettled and melancholic without knowing quite why. Until last night. I was added wrapping paper to this week’s shopping list, when it struck me. Aha! Christmas. Also … my birthday. Yikes! Already? When you’re young, an hour can last forever. But when you get old, my loves, decades go by in a blink. You see, it’s neither aging nor the maladies holding its hand that bothers me so. It’s time.

The year I was born: aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, aka the Black Dahlia, was found brutally murdered in a vacant lot in Los Angeles; a supposedly downed extraterrestrial spacecraft was reportedly found near Roswell, New Mexico; and ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ was first shown in theaters. Movies have always been a large part of my life. The images above represent one of my favorite films of all time, running second only to ‘A Christmas Story’ in terms of most-watched. Storylines aside, the appeal for both are the cultural references: women’s shoulder pads, hairstyles, radio programs, running boards, toys, school, snow, santa and so on. Memories. Home. How i’ll miss it all.

So now. Without benefit of help, do you know the title of the film? Or am I a lone dinosaur with a blog, wishing for a time machine?
